SMART CENTS

Here at EBBL we believe in the power of personal financial literacy as the means of improving one’s economic status. Personal financial literacy is an asset that is crucial for people of all ages and, yet, it is severely lacking in educational systems. As such, Eesha Bhatia, founder of EBBL, has created a financial literacy program—called SMART CENTS—that students around the world can utilize. With the help of resources by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and successful CEOs whose organizations are sponsors of EBBL, she has created the aforementioned program. There are a set of units and lessons, with an answer key that has an explanation to every single question. There is also a list of learning objectives associated with these lessons that teachers and educators can use. Currently, this program has been implemented at Bak Dov Primary school in Cambodia. It is in the process of being implemented at two schools within New Jersey and a school in India.

How it started

As we prepared for our 2022 trip, we had an important realization. Even though our efforts to improve the infrastructure and resources were successful, in order to truly break this generational cycle of poverty students were stuck in, we decided to attack the more systemic issues present in the school system. Before leaving, we researched the economic situation of most of the students at Bak Dov Primary school: how much pocket money they carry, if they frequent banks with their parents, etc. From this process, we were able to create specialized personal financial literacy worksheets that taught important finance concepts at an elementary level. Then, we got these worksheets translated into Khmer (language spoken in Cambodia) through an online translator.

Below you can see pictures of some of these worksheets and the kids working on them!
